What is Asbestos?

Asbestos was widely used in construction as an effective insulator, and it can be added to cloth, paper, cement, plastic and other materials to make them stronger. But when asbestos dust is inhaled or ingested, the fibres can become permanently trapped in the body. Over decades, trapped asbestos fibres can cause inflammation, scarring and eventually genetic damage.

The Hazards of Asbestos

Breathing in asbestos fibres can cause cancer and other diseases, such as:

  • Asbestosis: Scarring of the lungs, which makes it difficult to breathe.

  • Mesothelioma: A rare cancer of the lining of the chest or abdominal cavity.

  • Lung cancer: Smoking can greatly increase this risk.
